Chinese Kangxi Period Sancai “Egg-and-Spinach” Porcelain Reclining Laughing Boy

Description

A Chinese Kangxi Period Bisque Porcelain Sancai / Egg-and-Spinach Glazed Reclining Laughing Boy, Inscribed “Huakai Fugui” (花开富贵). The porcelain figure is modeled as a reclining laughing boy resting upon an elongated rectangular plinth. The child is shown in a relaxed pose with the head tilted upward and the torso supported on one arm, while the legs extend outward with one knee raised. The figure wears loose garments covered in sancai glaze composed of green, amber yellow, cream, and aubergine tones associated with the so called “egg and spinach” palette. The glaze is applied with flowing transitions and visible pooling along the folds of the robe and edges of the base. The facial features are softly molded with rounded cheeks and a smiling expression. The plinth is decorated in relief with Chinese characters and retains an open vent to the reverse. This figure is identified as a Chinese bisque porcelain sancai reclining laughing boy. Labels to the underside include Chait Galleries, New York, identifying the work as Kangxi period porcelain, together with collection and auction labels from Christie’s dated March 25, 1998. The inscription upon the base reads Huakai Fugui (花开富贵), translated as “prosperity and honor through flourishing blossoms.” Figures of this type were produced in porcelain workshops working with low temperature sancai glazes applied over molded bisque bodies. The combination of figural modeling and auspicious inscription reflects decorative objects intended to convey wishes for prosperity, family happiness, and favorable fortune.
