Description

An Important and Quite Unusual Pair of Meissen Porcelain Filigree Vases with Raised Flowers. Each vase is modeled in an elongated baluster form with a flared rim, rounded shoulder, waisted lower section, and spreading circular foot. The bodies are executed in openwork porcelain with a pierced trellis or filigree lattice formed by intersecting diagonal bands creating repeating diamond reserves. Vertical and horizontal divisions are enriched with gilt outlining, while the rims and bases are finished with gilt borders. Applied flowering vines rise asymmetrically across the reticulated surfaces, winding around the body in high relief. The floral decoration includes molded roses in white, blush pink, and mauve tones, blue bellflowers, yellow primrose-like blossoms, purple pansies or violets, daisy forms with yellow centers, forget-me-not clusters, and orange and red blossoms resembling nasturtiums or wild garden flowers. The stems and tendrils are rendered in naturalistic relief with molded green leaves and branching vines extending across both vessels. The porcelain surfaces retain a glazed finish with pronounced sculptural depth created through the raised floral application and pierced construction. The pair is identified as Meissen porcelain and bears the underglaze blue crossed swords mark to the underside, applied with clarity and corresponding to the manufactory’s established factory cipher. Meissen workshops produced reticulated and floral porcelains requiring multiple stages of modeling, firing, and assembly.
