Description

A Monumental 19th Century French Hand-Painted Majolica Rooster Vase Signed by Jerome Massier. The body is modeled in high relief with a textured surface simulating feathers. The tail feathers extend outward, curving and overlapping, with a mix of green, blue, purple, and brown glazes. The comb and wattles are sculpted with raised ridges and finished in red and orange hues. The open beak reveals a detailed tongue and interior. The wings are positioned along the sides with layered feathers, incorporating yellow, brown, and black glazes. The base is designed as a textured mound resembling a naturalistic ground, incorporating green and brown glazes with small sculpted flowers. The rooster's legs are detailed with segmented scales, terminating in three forward-facing toes and one rear-facing toe, each ending in sharp talons. The vase opening is located at the back of the rooster, integrated within the curvature of the tail. The interior of the vase is left unglazed, showing the ceramic body. The signature "Jerome Massier" is present on the base of the piece. France, Circa: 1890's
