Description

A Pair of 19th Century Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Vases Turned to Lamps. This pair of Chinese blue and white porcelain vases has been converted into table lamps while retaining the original baluster form with broad shoulders, a tapering neck, and a flared rim. Each vase is decorated with a deep cobalt blue ground covered by white scrolling foliate decoration and repeated floral motifs arranged across the surface. Red coral enamel painted molded chilong dragons are applied around the shoulder and neck, while iron red Chinese characters and green tassel motifs are incorporated into the design. The porcelain bodies are mounted on carved wood bases and fitted with polished brass lamp mounts and double socket standards. The vases display the decorative vocabulary associated with Chinese export porcelain of the nineteenth century. The cobalt ground is densely filled with continuous scrolling vines, lotus blossoms, and stylized floral sprays executed in underglaze blue and white. The applied chilong handles project from the shoulders in high relief and retain gilt highlights. The brass fittings have been added during the conversion to lamps and include stepped collars, twin sockets, pull chain switches, and turned finials. Chinese porcelain of this type was produced using high fired porcelain bodies decorated with cobalt pigment beneath a clear glaze before firing. Vases with molded dragon ornament and dense floral decoration were created in a range of sizes for both domestic use and export. The substantial porcelain bodies and detailed surface decoration make this pair well suited for conversion into decorative lighting while preserving the original ceramic forms.
