Description

A Fine Pair of 19th-Century French Japonisme Gilt Bronze-Mounted Porcelain Vases with Double Handles, Resting on Black Marble Bases, by Louis Pierre Malpass. The vases have an elongated ovoid body, a flared neck, and a domed lid with a finial. The gilt bronze handles curve outward and upward, terminating in volute-shaped scrolls. The neck and shoulder feature blue enamel accents. The front of each vase displays a hand-painted portrait of a woman in traditional Japanese attire. The portraits are framed within a circular reserve on a gilt ground adorned with incised floral patterns. One portrait features a woman wearing a purple garment, while the other depicts a woman in a striped kimono with a red collar. The reverse of each vase features a decorative medallion with a landscape scene in monochrome. One vase depicts a small structure among trees, while the other shows a pagoda-like building. The surrounding gilt surface is further decorated with incised floral and geometric motifs. The vases are mounted on square black marble bases with gilt decoration consisting of stylized floral motifs. The bases are stepped and slightly recessed at the sides. The artist's signature, "Louis Pierre Malpass," is visible on the painted portraits. France, Circa: 1890
