17th/18th C. Italian Pietra Dura Ebony Casket with Ormolu Mounts, Ducal Workshop

Description

An Important and Rare 17th to 18th Century Italian Pietra Dura Ormolu Mounted Ebony Jewelry Box/ Casket, attributed to Ducal workshop. The rectangular body is raised on four cast gilt bronze scroll feet and fitted with a hinged lid. The lid displays a long rectangular pietra dura panel depicting a symmetrical floral arrangement composed of hardstone blossoms, leaves, and butterflies set against a dark ground. A large central flower formed from mottled blue stone is surrounded by additional blossoms in orange and cream tones, with branching leaves extending outward across the panel. The front and sides contain framed pietra dura panels depicting single flowers, cherries, and butterflies. Each panel is bordered by narrow gilt moldings and deep blue stone surrounds, set within recessed ebony frames carved with a small repeating block pattern. Each plaque is framed by narrow gilt moldings and a blue stone border. At the corners where the sides meet, vertical ormolu mounts form sculptural supports. These mounts are cast as grotesque masks with pronounced brows, deep set eyes, and a long stylized beard, beneath which the mounts continue downward into relief carvings of fruit clusters and foliage. The decorative panels are executed in the technique of pietra dura, a method of hardstone inlay developed in Italian court workshops. Thin sections of colored stone are individually cut and shaped to form botanical elements such as petals, leaves, fruit, and butterflies. Each piece is carefully fitted into a carved recess within the surface to create a continuous image. The stones display natural coloration including blue, cream, orange, green, and red tones that define the individual elements of the compositions. When assembled, the stones form detailed floral scenes across the lid and sides of the casket. The finished panels are set flush within the ebony structure and bordered with gilt frames and stone bands. The construction of the casket combines ebony joinery, hardstone inlay, and cast gilt bronze mounts. The carved ebony frames, the fitted pietra dura plaques, and the sculptural ormolu mounts demonstrate the high level of workmanship associated with luxury objects produced for aristocratic interiors.
