Pair of 19th Century Chinese Crackle Glaze Celadon Porcelain Famille Rose Vases With Pomegranate Handles, Fertility Vases! The pair of vases are formed in a tall baluster shape with a rounded body rising to a tapering neck and a flared rim. The surface is covered in a pale celadon crackle glaze with a pronounced crackle network throughout. Around the neck are butterflies in flight among branches modeled in relief. Each side is applied with sculpted pomegranate handles issuing from dark twisting stems with leaves, the fruit suspended at mid neck. The shoulder is defined by a narrow border beneath the neck. The main body is painted in famille rose enamels with continuous figural scenes set within landscape and architectural settings. One principal scene depicts mounted warriors engaged in combat before mountains and banners, representing martial valor and loyalty. Another scene shows court figures assembled on a terrace with attendants and a central seated official behind a table, referring to rank, authority, and formal ceremony. Additional panels include scholars and attendants within interiors framed by trees, rockwork, and balustrades, reflecting themes of civil service and learned culture. The lower section is finished with a wide enamel band of scrolling floral motifs above a short circular foot. The enamel decoration was applied over the glaze and fired at a lower temperature. The pomegranate handles were formed separately and attached before glazing. The pomegranate motif is traditionally associated with fertility and abundance due to its many seeds, symbolizing prosperity and continuity. The painting shows controlled line work in the faces, garments, and architectural elements, and the enamel application is consistent across the surface. The underside of each vase bears a square seal mark painted in underglaze black within a recessed base. The mark is written in seal script and arranged in a four character format inside a square reserve.
