Beautiful Chinese Archaic Style Qing Dynasty Covered Agate Censer, with Foo Dog The censer is carved in a faceted archaistic form with a wide body rising to a stepped shoulder and a fitted cover surmounted by a sculpted finial. The vessel is executed from banded agate displaying tones of grey, white, brown, and reddish inclusions distributed throughout the surface. The main body is divided into recessed panels, each carved in relief with archaic taotie masks framed by angular scroll borders. These masks display broad eyes, curling horns, and symmetrical facial elements drawn from ancient ritual bronze decoration. Above the body, the shoulder section is carved with smaller relief panels of scrolling ornament beneath the cover. The cover is topped with a carved Pixiu figure serving as the knop, shown crouching with raised head and defined mane. At each side of the vessel are sculpted mythical beast head handles supporting loose rings carved from the same stone. The censer stands on three curved supports that descend from the body and rest on a carved base. The agate surface is polished to reveal the natural translucency and layered coloration of the stone. This censer is identified as a Qing Dynasty agate example following the form of earlier ritual bronze vessels. The taotie masks carved on the body reference ancient Chinese ceremonial decoration associated with authority and ritual practice. The Pixiu finial holds auspicious meaning in Chinese culture and is traditionally regarded as a guardian creature believed to attract wealth and protect possessions. The use of agate with strong natural color variation allowed the carver to emphasize the sculptural relief of the masks and animal figures. Hardstone carving workshops during the Qing Dynasty produced ritual inspired vessels using agate, jade, and other dense stones. Such works required careful shaping, drilling, and polishing due to the hardness of the material. The present censer displays clear carving across the mask panels, well defined animal heads, and balanced structural elements.
