Chinese Famille Rose Fish Bow/Jardiniere/Planter with Painted Scholar Items This large Chinese famille rose fish bowl is of rounded form with a broad flared rim and a gently tapering body rising from a recessed foot. The exterior is divided into shaped reserves outlined in iron red, alternating with densely painted floral scroll grounds. The principal panels depict scholar objects arranged on stands and low tables, including vases filled with peony and chrysanthemum blooms, flowering branches, stacked books, a qin, a ruyi scepter, a jardiniere with rockwork, and small ritual vessels. Additional panels show lotus sprays with fish and blossoming prunus branches within circular medallions. The surrounding ground is filled with scrolling foliage, stylized blossoms, bats, and auspicious emblems rendered in pink, turquoise, green and iron red. A band of upright lappets encircles the lower body above the foot, while the rim is bordered with key fret and patterns in pink and green enamels. The interior is glazed in pale tone with small floral sprigs painted along the inner rim. The scholar objects depicted represent the accoutrements of the literati studio. Books and the qin refer to scholarship and cultivated accomplishment. The ruyi symbolizes authority and wish fulfillment, while vases of peony signify wealth and honor.
