Magnificent Kinkozan Satsuma Vase with Ladies Beneath Wisteria, Meiji Period, Marked Dai Nippon Kyoto Awata Kinkozan The vase is formed in a tall baluster shape with a rounded shoulder rising to a narrow neck and a wide flared rim. The surface is finished in a smooth ivory ground with dense gilt stippling across the upper body and neck. Beneath the shoulder runs a continuous band of geometric diaper ornament punctuated by circular medallions. Cascading wisteria branches extend across the upper register, rendered in enamel and gilt with pendant clusters descending toward the figural scenes. The main body depicts groups of ladies and children engaged in domestic activity, including a seated woman holding a child, attendants positioned beside a low table with floral arrangements, and a figure carrying a basket on her head. The garments are painted in layered enamels with gilt linework defining floral and textile patterns. The lower section is bordered by a band of stylized lotus petals above a key fret collar encircling the foot. The interior of the neck and the rim are fully gilded. The underside bears a gilt signature reading Dai Nippon Kyoto Awata Kinkozan, arranged in vertical characters within the recessed base. The inscription is centered and clearly executed, identifying the Awata district of Kyoto and the Kinkozan workshop. The mark remains legible, with light wear consistent with handling. The Kinkozan workshop in Kyoto was known for Satsuma ware decorated with enamel painting and extensive gilt application. This example reflects that production through its controlled ivory ground, precise figural rendering, and consistent gilding across the surface. The layering of enamel decoration over the glaze and the even distribution of ornament demonstrate careful studio execution characteristic of Awata Kinkozan output.
