Pair 18th C. Chinese Blanc de Chine Buddhist Lion/Foo Lion Incense Stick Holders. Pair of 18th C. Chinese Blanc de Chine Buddhist lion incense stick holders modeled as opposing foo lions seated upon rectangular plinths with pierced circular panels below. Each guardian displays curled manes, open mouths, raised forepaws, flowing tails, and sculpted ribbons across the back. One rests upon a reticulated ball, the other accompanies a cub. These Blanc de Chine incense holders were produced in Dehua, Fujian Province, a center recognized for monochrome porcelain using refined white clay and transparent glaze. Their Buddhist lion form reflects models created for domestic altars and scholarly settings. The paired arrangement follows established guardian conventions with complementary male and female figures facing inward across space. The figures are molded with smooth glaze covering the bodies and integral pedestal bases. Deep carving defines the facial features, paws, claws, and layered hair, while pierced panels provide openwork beneath the platforms.
