Rare French Art Deco Period Silver, Enamel, & Jade Box, Attributed to Cartier

Description

A French Art Deco Period Silver, Enamel, and Chinese Jade Double Slot box, attributed to Cartier. The box is barrel-shaped and finished in black enamel. It rests on a pair of Chinese-style silver supports, enameled in red and incorporating openwork scroll elements, attached to a rectangular green marble base. The base has a polished surface with natural veining. The hinged cover is mounted with a carved jade drop-ring handle in an animal-head form, secured by a silver fitting. The cylindrical body features two openwork jade panels on the sides, carved with foliage enclosing shou characters, set into silver mounts. The ends of the barrel are framed with silver rims and fitted with openwork jade discs, also carved with shou characters, secured in silver mounts. The interior is lined with gilt and divided into two compartments. The inside of the cover is marked with a partially legible maker's mark and a boar's head guarantee. The interior of the box also bears a guarantee mark. The cover rim and stand are stamped with the number "10437." English import marks are present throughout, including a rectangular mark with cut corners for "G().F," London, 1926. France, Circa: 1920
