Tiffany Studios Pine Needle Picture Frame, Model 947

Description

A Tiffany Studios New York gilt bronze and Favrile glass “Pine Needle” picture frame, Model 947, circa 1905–1910, of rectangular form with a broad openwork border surrounding a recessed photograph opening. The gilt bronze overlay is worked throughout with an irregular network of overlapping pine needles and radiating pine branch forms. Behind the pierced metalwork are sections of Favrile glass in cream, amber, and pale gold tones, visible through the open spaces of the bronze pattern. Continuous beaded borders define both the outer perimeter and the inner rectangular opening. The frame is supported by a hinged wire easel attached to the gilt metal back. The Pine Needle pattern is constructed from a pierced bronze overlay placed over individually fitted sections of Favrile glass. The bronze decoration includes long intersecting needles, clustered radial forms, and irregular linear passages that extend across all four sides. The glass beneath varies naturally in tone and opacity, with areas ranging from translucent amber to milky cream. The reverse is fitted with a rectangular metal back plate and a hinged support that allows the frame to stand vertically on a tabletop. The beaded edges provide defined borders between the openwork decoration, photograph opening, and exterior edge. Tiffany Studios produced the Pine Needle pattern across a range of desk and table accessories, combining cast or pierced metalwork with Favrile glass. Model 947 belongs to this group of Tiffany Studios picture frames and uses the same combination of gilt bronze, Favrile glass, openwork botanical decoration, and beaded moldings found in related Pine Needle objects. The construction required the bronze pattern to be formed separately before being fitted over the glass sections and assembled with the backing and easel support.
