19th C. Japanisme French Porcelain Jardinière w/ Gilt and Silvered-Bronze Stand

Description

An Antique 19th Century Japanism French Porcelain Jardinière with Gilt and Silvered-Bronze Tri-Footed Stand. This jardinière is in the Japanism style, resting on an ornate gilt and silvered-bronze tri-footed stand. The jardinière features a rounded form with a flared gilt bronze openwork gallery encircling the rim. The body is decorated against a turquoise ground with hand-painted motifs of birds, insects, and flowering branches, rendered in polychrome enamel with fine gilt accents. Delicate trellis patterns interspersed with stylized floral elements are applied in raised gilding. The porcelain is hand-adorned with gilt decoration to appear as though it is cloisonné. This is a tremendously difficult technique to accomplish on porcelain. This technique is used to mimic Japanese cloisonné objects. The porcelain body is also removable off the base. The jardinière is supported by a gilt and silvered-bronze stand with three scrolling legs, each adorned with foliate motifs and connected by a central support. The legs terminate in outward-curving feet, providing stability and an elegant contrast to the jardinière’s vibrant porcelain body. The combination of gilt and silvered finishes enhances the ornamental detailing of the stand. France, Circa: 1880
