A 19th C. Russian Ormolu Mounted Centerpiece with Porphyry and Carved Jade Cups. This Russian centerpiece is composed of a rectangular porphyry tray fitted with four carved jade cups arranged within circular ormolu holders. The tray is bordered by a continuous ormolu frame and fitted with a pair of open rectangular ormolu handles at either end. Each corner rests upon a carved rock crystal foot, raising the tray above the surface. The porphyry slab displays a deep reddish brown ground with scattered pale mineral inclusions, while the jade cups present mottled green tones ranging from dark olive to lighter emerald hues with natural black veining. Each cup is carved with a flared rim, rounded body, ring turned stem, and circular spreading foot. The polished surfaces reveal the natural variations within the stone, and each cup sits securely within a fitted ormolu ring that is recessed into the tray. This centerpiece is executed in the Russian tradition of combining ornamental hardstones with gilt bronze mounts. Russian workshops of the nineteenth century were known for producing luxury table objects using native decorative stones including jade, porphyry, malachite, rhodonite, and other hardstones sourced throughout the Russian Empire. The restrained ormolu mounts provide structural support while emphasizing the carved stone components. The form reflects the preference for geometric arrangements and the use of contrasting materials that became closely associated with Russian decorative arts of the period. The jade cups are carved from solid stone and finished with smooth interiors and exterior surfaces that preserve the natural color and figuring of the material. Their turned stems incorporate a series of concentric rings above the baluster section before widening into circular feet. The ormolu holders are individually fitted into the porphyry tray, allowing each cup to be removed independently. The combination of carved jade, porphyry, ormolu, and rock crystal demonstrates the use of multiple ornamental materials within a single functional centerpiece, a characteristic feature of Russian hardstone production during the nineteenth century.
