"Les Roses" French Gilt Bronze & Marble Figural Centerpiece By Mathurin Moreau

Description

A late 19th-century French figural vase by Mathurin Moreau, titled: "LES ROSES", composed of patinated and gilt bronze, marble, and ormolu. The piece features a bronze female figure in a contrapposto stance, draped with a flowing cloth extending from her waist, with one foot raised and resting against a columnar support. The figure is cast in patinated bronze with a smooth finish, detailed facial features, and curled hair. The central urn is made of polished, veined marble in shades of deep red and cream, with a gilt bronze rim and floral garlands draped over its surface. The urn is mounted onto a tapered, columnar bronze pedestal with applied ormolu mounts, including a central shield-shaped cartouche. The pedestal has a circular ormolu base with a molded edge and raised leaf-patterned decoration. The entire composition is affixed to a rectangular rouge marble plinth with beveled edges. The plinth has a gilt bronze nameplate inscribed Les Roses and Math. Moreau (Hors Concours). Additional gilt bronze floral elements, including roses and leaves, are applied to the base and along the figure’s grasp. The materials are assembled with visible fastenings where the bronze elements meet the marble and ormolu fittings. France, Circa: 1890
