A Meissen Porcelain Model of a Polar Bear, by Jarl. A Meissen porcelain model of a polar bear by Jarl depicts the animal standing in a forward stride with its head turned slightly to one side and its mouth partially open. The figure is modeled with a long body, broad shoulders, and sturdy legs ending in defined paws with incised claws. The fur is rendered in low relief with irregular contours across the shoulders, flanks, neck, and hindquarters, creating a natural surface texture while retaining the smooth white glazed finish. The nose and mouth are highlighted in black enamel, and the small ears and recessed eyes complete the restrained facial expression. The figure stands directly on its four feet without an applied base. This model was produced by the Meissen porcelain factory after a design by Jarl. The underside bears the factory’s underglaze blue crossed swords mark identifying Meissen production. Jarl is recognized for naturalistic animal models that became part of Meissen’s extensive sculptural output during the twentieth century, with many of his designs remaining among the factory’s best known porcelain animal studies. Meissen porcelain figures are formed from hard paste porcelain and fired at high temperatures before receiving a clear glaze.
