Mixed Metal Ormolu Mounted Silvered and Gilt Bronze 2-Handled Oval Jardiniere/Centerpiece, Attributed to Christofel The jardiniere is formed as an oval basin with a flared rim and a slightly tapering body, raised on an openwork ormolu base. The rim is encircled by a cast foliate border, and the interior is finished in gilt bronze with a smooth surface. The exterior body is silvered bronze with extensive gilt decoration in scrolling foliate patterns, urn motifs, and lattice elements arranged in symmetrical panels. At the center of each long side is an oval cartouche containing a classical female mask framed by radiating elements and garland detail. The jardiniere is fitted with two opposing handles modeled as salamanders, each creature arched upward from the rim with textured bodies and defined scales, terminating in scrolling supports. The openwork base is cast with scrolling brackets and shell motifs, centered on one side with a projecting satyr mask in high relief. The underside shows a fitted base plate secured with visible fastenings. This mixed metal centerpiece is attributed to Christofle. The design and execution correspond to documented works produced by the firm in silvered and gilt bronze during the nineteenth century. Christofle was known for combining silvered surfaces with gilt mounts and for producing ornamental table pieces in revival styles.
