Description

A Stunning Pair of Empire Dore Bronze Four Light Candelabra, Which Convert to Candlesticks. Each constructed with a circular base supporting a tall fluted shaft and detachable four light upper section. The central stem rises from a broad platform base cast with concentric reserves of geometric and foliate ornament, including lattice panels, floral motifs, and textured ground decoration enclosed by a beaded border. The shaft is formed with vertical fluting and divided by collars cast with acanthus and diaper ornament. The upper standard is with alternating bands of fluting and scale pattern, surmounted by a central candle socket with a flared nozzle. Four curved candle arms extend from the body around the central light, creating a four light arrangement. The scrolling arms are cast with diagonal diaper motifs and terminate in circular drip pans and textured candle cups. Small volute scrolls flank the central socket, each enclosing a rosette detail. The surface retains a dore bronze finish with contrasting matte and burnished gilding visible throughout the chased decoration. The top can be removed and the fixture can be used as a stand-alone candlestick, which is an unusual and quite impressive object. These candelabra are executed in the Empire style, a decorative vocabulary associated with architectural symmetry, classical ornament, and precise bronze casting. The construction and decorative language correspond to high quality French dore bronze production, where detachable candle branches and finely chased surfaces were integral to the manufacture of formal lighting objects.
