Description

A Fantastic Pair of 18th-Century Russian Dore Bronze Mounted, Rock Crystal, and Marble Three-Arm Candelabra with Dog’s Heads. Each candelabrum is set on a circular white marble base encircled by a gilt bronze band decorated with a continuous laurel leaf frieze. The bases support three upright gilt bronze supports terminating in paw feet and hung with laurel swags. Above, a central rock crystal sphere is mounted within a gilt bronze collar adorned with a rosette medallion at the front, flanked by outward-facing candle arms emerging from finely cast dog’s head terminals gripping the scrolling branches in their jaws. Each of the three candle arms terminates in a gilt bronze socket with a beaded rim and acanthus leaf decoration around the base, from which faceted crystal prisms are suspended. The central stem, rising above the rock crystal sphere, is composed of gilt bronze foliate scrolls and acanthus leaves, also hung with faceted crystal drops. This stem supports a faceted rock crystal shaft leading to a gilt bronze corona from which multiple curved branches extend, each suspending strands of oval and teardrop-shaped crystal prisms arranged in cascading tiers. Additional faceted crystal drops are positioned throughout, including beneath the drip pans and on the central mounts. The use of dore bronze, rock crystal, and marble aligns with the luxury decorative arts of Russian neoclassical design. The incorporation of animal head arm mounts, laurel swags, and paw feet follows. The pairing of richly cast gilt bronze with the clarity of rock crystal and marble base reflects the opulent materials and precise ornamentation favored in 18th-century Russian lighting pieces.
