A Large 19th Century Meissen Porcelain Group of Lovers in Rococo Attire of Fantastic quality and condition. A 19th Century Meissen porcelain group depicting a pair of lovers in Rococo attire standing arm in arm upon a shaped oval base with molded scrollwork highlighted in gilt. The female figure wears a flowing gown with a fitted bodice, floral striped decoration, and pink ribbon trim, while her hair is arranged in a high coiffure gathered into a bun. She lifts the edge of her skirt with one hand and leans toward her companion. The gentleman is dressed in a long frock coat with gilt edging, a patterned waistcoat, breeches, stockings, and buckled shoes. He carries a black tricorne hat beneath one arm while resting his other arm around the lady. A naturalistic tree trunk rises behind the figures, with applied leaves and ground cover extending across the base. This porcelain group was produced by the Meissen porcelain manufactory, the leading German producer of hard paste porcelain. The underside bears the factory's underglaze blue crossed swords mark, identifying its manufacture. Meissen became well known for producing figural compositions inspired by courtly subjects, with models depicting elegantly dressed couples among the most recognizable forms created by the factory. Figures of this type were modeled, assembled, and decorated by skilled craftsmen before being fired and finished with hand applied enamels and gilt accents. The group is modeled in hard paste porcelain with a glazed surface and hand painted decoration. The floral patterns covering the lady's dress, the geometric ornament on the gentleman's waistcoat, and the gilt borders throughout were applied individually by hand. The sculpted tree trunk provides structural support while remaining integrated into the composition. The shaped base is finished with molded Rococo scrollwork, gilt ornament, and painted foliage, reflecting production methods associated with Meissen porcelain figures of the nineteenth century.
