A Unique Meissen Porcelain Blanc de Chine Model of a Baboon by Max Esser A rare Meissen Blanc de Chine porcelain model of a seated baboon, designed by the celebrated German sculptor Max Esser (1885–1945), one of the foremost animal sculptors associated with the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. The baboon is portrayed in a contemplative seated pose with its knees drawn upward, one arm resting across the other while its elongated hands extend naturally toward the front of the shaped base. The expressive face is rendered with remarkable realism, featuring a pronounced muzzle, deeply recessed eyes, broad cheek ruff, and finely modeled facial hair. The sculpted fur is executed with extraordinary precision, creating a rich contrast against the smooth, unglazed surfaces of the face, hands, and feet, while the long tail curves gracefully along the side of the naturalistically modeled base. This figure was produced during the highly desirable Pfeiffer Period at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (circa 1924–1934), one of the factory's greatest periods of artistic innovation and technical achievement.
