19th Century Russian White Opaline Crystal Covered Bottle with Gold and Platinum. A 19th Century Russian White Opaline Crystal Covered Bottle with Gold and Platinum, the vessel of compressed globular form with a short cylindrical neck fitted with a matching domed stopper surmounted by a spherical finial. The bottle is executed in white opaline crystal with a polished surface and is decorated around the shoulder with alternating gold and platinum floral sprays composed of leaves, blossoms, and clustered berries. A broad gilt band encircles the neck below the rim, while a narrow gilt border separates the shoulder decoration from a continuous pendant leaf border extending around the body. The stopper repeats the decorative scheme with a ring of gilt radiating leaf motifs surrounding the top and a gilt band around the collar. The underside is smoothly finished with a recessed circular pontil. This covered bottle is Russian and reflects the decorative opaline glass production associated with the Imperial glassworks during the 19th century. The restrained use of gold and platinum decoration is characteristic of luxury Russian table and dressing table objects produced during the period. The decoration is hand applied directly to the opaline surface and follows a symmetrical arrangement around the vessel. Russian opaline crystal production of the 19th century combined hand blown forms with polished finishing and fired precious metal decoration.
