An Important & Rare Neoclassical Doré Bronze Oval Shaped Wall Mirror with Seated Griffins, E. F. Caldwell & Co. New York An oval wall mirror executed in doré bronze, conceived on a pronounced vertical axis characteristic of American neoclassical decorative metalwork. The mirror plate is framed by a molded inner surround following the oval contour, enclosed within a fully sculptural bronze framework. The crest is formed by an urn-shaped finial surmounted by a flame ornament. To either side of the urn are ram’s-head terminals, modeled in high relief, from which draped chain swags descend symmetrically and attach to scrolling foliate supports. Projecting brackets at the upper register support seated winged griffins, oriented inward toward the mirror surface. The lower section is composed of scrolling foliage, rosettes, and pendant chain motifs, terminating in a centered foliate drop. Ornament throughout is sharply articulated, with acanthus leaves, rosettes, chains, and scrolls arranged in a strictly symmetrical layout. The ram heads are prominently integrated into the cresting structure, their curved horns and facial features clearly defined. The griffins are rendered with extended wings and elongated bodies, seated on molded bases that project from the frame. The doré bronze surface is uniform across all elements, with consistent 2 tone gilding and well-preserved relief definition. The design reflects the established vocabulary of E.F. Caldwell & Co., one of the most influential American decorative metal firms active from the late 19th to early 20th century. Caldwell was a principal supplier to major architects and interior decorators in New York, producing mirrors, lighting, and architectural ornaments for prominent residences, clubs, and institutional interiors. The firm is documented for adapting French neoclassical and Empire models into large-scale doré bronze works for the American market, with recurring use of urns, ram heads, chains, and mythological figures. This mirror aligns closely with those documented Caldwell compositions in both material and ornamental structure. We have also found the original drawings from the Caldwell archives that we have posted here as well. This particular mirror happens to be one of the nicest mirrors in design, condition, and quality by E. F. Caldwell that we have seen.
